DCYIA Pastoral Agent Training 2019:
On August 2 to 9, 2019, we hosted the first Deaf Pastoral Agents training at the Hotel Fiesta Americana in Cuernavaca, Mexico, along with the second training for Catholic Interpreters. Nineteen Deaf participants from Latin Americas -17 from Mexico (Michoacán, Jalisco, Sonora, Puebla, Oaxaca, Aguascalientes and others) 2 from Santiago, Chile, and 1 from Trinidad - registered for the training for pastoral workers. Most of them are doing pastoral work in their churches at different levels and desiring to do more for their Deaf communities.
The training empowered them to develop their deeper knowledge and their skills in pastoral work, and strengthened their relationship with God.
Their instructors were Deacon Patrick Graybill, Sr. Bonnie McMenamin, and Laureen Lynch-Ryan, a lay person/social worker. We had interpreters using American Sign Language and Mexican Sign Language to facilitate communication between the team of instructors and the participants in training sessions and liturgies.
On Friday, August 2, the pastoral agents and Interpreters arrived in time for lunch. All of them were greeted like good old friends and were excited to get acquainted with new people.
Before the meal, they checked into their hotel rooms to drop off their stuff. After lunch, we waited for more people to arrive until 6 pm or so due to flight and traffic delays before we went ahead to have an Icebreaker session. We had so much fun doing some activities before Mass and dinner.
Every morning we had breakfast and group prayer before training sessions. Daily the pastoral agents and interpreters in training was divided by the pastoral agents and interpreters to work as teams to create morning and other prayers each day.
We began with The Foundation of Ministry and Pastoral Workers, identified what they could do for the church as well as elsewhere. The participants did not realize there were more than one or two duties and responsibilities. Besides, they shared and discussed their stories to enlighten one another. After a break, the next session focused on Understanding Deaf Culture. The interpreters in training joined them during that session.
Every afternoon/evening we had two sessions: Developing the Tool Kit and Preparing Presentations. Those sessions helped the pastoral agents to create their personal kits based on their new learning from the morning and early afternoon sessions so they could remember them when returning to their communities to share them with others. Also, they had an opportunity to practice how to give lectures based on what they had learned in their training sessions. They received positive feedback to help them to master their skills.
We had a Mass every evening before dinner. The pastoral agents and interpreters were divided into teams to be either lectors or interpreters during the Mass to practice signing the liturgy readings.
On Sunday morning we had activities about Identity. One of them activities was “Who am I?” to help them to discover more about themselves. They liked their activity and took it home to be shared with their people. Then we did the Color Personality activity. They loved that activity and learned more about themselves. It was used in their morning prayers.
On Monday morning, we had Principles and Practices Guidelines led by our guest speaker, Fr. Martin Peralto of Hermosillo. That mini-course focused on the characteristics of the pastoral agent within deaf culture in the church. Then in the afternoon we had a special guest speaker, Ms. Melissa Draganac-Hawk, the Board President of National Association of the Deaf and also a trained speaker for Self-Advocacy. She was born in Peru and moved to America in her childhood. She presented Self-Advocacy on both days, Monday and Tuesday afternoon. The topic focused on the meaning of an advocacy and empowerment that helped Deaf persons to be proactive leaders and achieve their goals.
On Tuesday morning, a session focused on Mission and Ministry in the Church today so it helped the participants to be aware of the nation-wide Church national. Also, they learned more about the doctrines. Self-Advocacy continued in the afternoon. After lunch, we had whole group of pastoral agents and interpreters in training to learn about sexual abuse and conduct as a part of the awareness training so they could be prepared if they faced the dire situation wherever they would be.
Wednesday/Thursday, pastoral agents merged with interpreters in training to attend the workshop “Translation, Interpretation, and Liturgical Space. They learned how to work together during a liturgical preparation. Also Fr. Martin Peralto presented another workshop on Interpreting in meetings with Church officials to empower a Deaf person to meet with a church authority with the aid of an interpreter. Afterwards, Fr. Joe Mulcrone presented the topic “Fundraising” to give pastoral agents the guiding tools to seek funds for their churches. They learned so much that they kept asking many questions about it.
On Thursday afternoon, pastoral agents and their team leaders were wrapping up with show and tell activities as well as feedback evaluations. We had a great time by having a wonderful farewell dinner

Del 2 al 9 de agosto de 2019, fuimos anfitriones del primer entrenamiento para Agentes Pastorales de Sordos en el Hotel Fiesta Americana en Cuernavaca, México, junto con el segundo entrenamiento para Intérpretes Católicos. Diecinueve participantes sordos de América Latina -17 de México (Michoacán, Jalisco, Sonora, Puebla, Oaxaca, Aguascalientes y otros) 2 de Santiago de Chile y 1 de Trinidad- se inscribieron en la capacitación para agentes pastorales. La mayoría de ellos están haciendo trabajo pastoral en sus iglesias a diferentes niveles y desean hacer más por sus comunidades de sordos.
La capacitación les permitió desarrollar sus conocimientos más profundos y sus habilidades en el trabajo pastoral, y fortaleció su relación con Dios.
Sus instructores fueron el diácono Patrick Graybill, la hermana Bonnie McMenamin y Laureen Lynch-Ryan, una laica/trabajadora social. Teníamos intérpretes que utilizaban el lenguaje de signos americano y el lenguaje de signos mexicano para facilitar la comunicación entre el equipo de instructores y los participantes en las sesiones de formación y las liturgias.
El viernes 2 de agosto, los agentes pastorales e intérpretes llegaron a tiempo para el almuerzo. Todos fueron recibidos como buenos viejos amigos y estaban emocionados por conocer gente nueva.
Antes de la comida, se registraron en sus habitaciones de hotel para dejar sus cosas. Después de la comida, esperamos a que llegara más gente hasta las 6 pm más o menos debido a los retrasos de los vuelos y el tráfico antes de seguir adelante para tener una sesión de rompehielos. Nos divertimos mucho haciendo algunas actividades antes de la misa y la cena.
Todas las mañanas desayunábamos y rezábamos en grupo antes de las sesiones de entrenamiento. Diariamente los agentes pastorales e intérpretes en entrenamiento fueron divididos por los agentes pastorales e intérpretes para trabajar en equipo para crear las oraciones matutinas y otras oraciones cada día.
Comenzamos con la Fundación de Ministerio y Trabajadores Pastorales, identificamos lo que podían hacer por la iglesia así como en otros lugares. Los participantes no se dieron cuenta de que había más de uno o dos deberes y responsabilidades. Además, compartieron y discutieron sus historias para iluminarse mutuamente. Después de una pausa, la siguiente sesión se centró en la comprensión de la cultura de los sordos. Los intérpretes en formación se unieron a ellos durante esa sesión.
Cada tarde/noche teníamos dos sesiones: Desarrollo de la caja de herramientas y preparación de presentaciones. Esas sesiones ayudaron a los agentes pastorales a crear sus kits personales basados en sus nuevos aprendizajes de las sesiones de la mañana y de la tarde, para que pudieran recordarlos al regresar a sus comunidades para compartirlos con otros. Además, tuvieron la oportunidad de practicar cómo dar conferencias basadas en lo que habían aprendido en sus sesiones de capacitación. Recibieron una retroalimentación positiva que les ayudó a dominar sus habilidades.
Teníamos una misa todas las noches antes de la cena. Los agentes pastorales y los intérpretes se dividieron en equipos para ser lectores o intérpretes durante la misa para practicar la firma de las lecturas de la liturgia.
El domingo por la mañana tuvimos actividades sobre la identidad. Una de ellas era "¿Quién soy?" para ayudarles a descubrir más sobre sí mismos. Les gustó la actividad y se la llevaron a casa para compartirla con su gente. Luego hicimos la actividad de Personalidad de Color. Les encantó esa actividad y aprendieron más sobre sí mismos. Se usaba en sus oraciones matutinas.
El lunes por la mañana, tuvimos Principios y Guías de Prácticas dirigidas por nuestro orador invitado, el Padre Martín Peralto de Hermosillo. Ese minicurso se centró en las características del agente pastoral dentro de la cultura sorda en la iglesia. Luego en la tarde tuvimos una oradora invitada especial, la Sra. Melissa Draganac-Hawk, la Presidenta de la Junta de la Asociación Nacional de Sordos y también una oradora capacitada para la autodefensa. Ella nació en Perú y se mudó a América en su infancia. Presentó "Autodefensa" los dos días, el lunes y el martes por la tarde. El tema se centró en el significado de la defensa y el empoderamiento que ayudó a las personas sordas a ser líderes proactivos y lograr sus objetivos.
El martes por la mañana, una sesión se centró en la Misión y el Ministerio en la Iglesia hoy en día por lo que ayudó a los participantes a ser conscientes de la Iglesia nacional. Además, aprendieron más sobre las doctrinas. La autodefensa continuó por la tarde. Después del almuerzo, tuvimos a todo el grupo de agentes pastorales e intérpretes en entrenamiento para aprender sobre el abuso sexual y la conducta como parte del entrenamiento de concientización para que estuvieran preparados si se enfrentaban a la terrible situación donde quiera que estuvieran.
Miércoles/jueves, los agentes pastorales se fusionaron con los intérpretes en formación para asistir al taller "Traducción, interpretación y espacio litúrgico". Aprendieron a trabajar juntos durante la preparación litúrgica. También el P. Martín Peralto presentó otro taller de Interpretación en reuniones con funcionarios de la Iglesia para capacitar a una persona sorda a reunirse con una autoridad de la Iglesia con la ayuda de un intérprete. Después, el P. Joe Mulcrone presentó el tema "Recaudación de fondos" para dar a los agentes pastorales las herramientas de guía para buscar fondos para sus iglesias. Aprendieron tanto que no dejaron de hacer muchas preguntas al respecto.
El jueves por la tarde, los agentes pastorales y sus líderes de equipo terminaron con actividades de "show and tell" y evaluaciones de retroalimentación. Lo pasamos muy bien teniendo una maravillosa cena de despedida e intercambio de regalos. A la mañana siguiente todos se fueron llorando y riendo.

Mi experiencia de DCYIA, fue muy enriquecedora y y seria muy valiosa para la comunidad sorda. En la realidad, dentro de la comunidad hay poca información, cada vez hay más personas sordas que no están intersadas en participar el pastoral, en el trabajo espiritualidad y entre otros por falta de Lengua de señas.
DCYIA nos abre la puerta, nos llenó el corazón y es maravilloso!!!

My DCYIA experience was very enriching and would be very valuable to the deaf community. In reality, within the community there is little information, there are more and more deaf people who are not interested in participating in pastoral work, in spiritual work and among others for lack of sign language.
DCYIA opens the door for us, it filled our hearts and it is wonderful!
