2002 St. Thomas University, Miami, Florida

DCYIA Miami

In 2002, we held our first Encuentro.  It took place at St. Thomas University in Miami, FL.  WE welcomed young Deaf people from Mexico, Venezuela, Canada and United States to share a week of experiencing community, prayer, life experience and hopes for the future.  The Encuentro came about through conversations among some of the team who saw the need to minister with Deaf young people and to share the experience of life and faith that crossed borders and cultures.

Our gathering at St Thomas University was held at the same time that the students enrolled in the university’s graduate program in Deaf Ministry.  The Deaf young people at the Encuentro and the graduate students were able to share through discussions and prayer the different ways in which their life experience and involvement in the Deaf Catholic community gave meaning and questions to their future hopes.  Of course, we were able to take a day trip to Disney World where everyone enjoyed the ‘magic’ of Disney!

As this was our first Encuentro and DCYIA’s first gathering of any kind, we, the team, learned much about what the needs of Deaf young people are and how best we might move into the future.

One of the great characteristics of DCYIA is that as an organization, we are always willing to learn.

In 2002, a group of pastoral workers, hearing and deaf, held out first Encuentro at St. Thomas University in Miami, FL.

Gloria a Dios!

I was impressed that young deaf people from the USA and Canada knew how to handle the bible very well, they expressed themselves naturally by doing stories and theatre.

Everyone participated enthusiastically in the preparations, talks and masses, but there was a lack of participation by the young people in the masses.

With respect to the Mass, everyone was very attentive and totally silent, the deaf of North America do not use voice for petitions, answers or offerings; only by signs. I, on the other hand, was the only one who answered orally and the interpreters looked at me. What a pity!

The only thing that saddened me was that on the last day, the young people wanted to stay in the social area all morning as a farewell, but they were not allowed to, having to call security to go to the rooms.

I believe that the topic of leadership should have been developed with more depth and according to the age of the participants.

It was necessary to make conclusions after the individual comments on the different topics in order to give the orientations and teaching to the young people for their spiritual improvement.

Thank you very much for the invitation to this meeting. At the end of the meeting I promised God that I would organize one in Venezuela. In the years 2004 and 2005 I did it; I organized the 1st and 2nd Meetings of Deaf Catholic Youth with the participation of 25 young people from different cities of Venezuela. Glory be to God!
