A pesar de que miles de personas sordas de Latinoamérica acceden a las misas y otra información de la Iglesia a través de intérpretes, son pocos los países que cuentan con un programa para formar a los intérpretes de lengua de señas y, de esta forma, asegurar la calidad del servicio y la plena participación de las personas sordas en la sociedad.
Por tanto, DCYIA-CITI ofrece un programa diseñado para adecuarse a las necesidades de los intérpretes católicos en lugares sin acceso a una formación de intérpretes estructurada. El plan de estudios, que sigue en desarrollo, puede ajustarse a un mini taller de una hora o a un diplomado completo de duración más larga.
Hasta el momento, hemos lanzado el programa en dos ocasiones, una vez en Coyoacán en 2017 (CITI 1) y otra en Cuernavaca en 2019 (CITI 2), cada una de una semana de duración, aprovechándonos cada vez de la oportunidad de mejorar el plan de estudios.
El plan de estudios se conforma por cinco pilares que determinamos imprescindibles desarrollar para ser un intérprete católico «integral». Los pilares son:
I. Idioma
El intérprete católico debe manejar con fluidez los idiomas con los que trabaja.
II. Teología
El intérprete católico debe manejar tanto el lenguaje teológico como los conceptos en sí.
III. Interpretación
El intérprete católico debe conocer las teorías de traducción e interpretación más importantes, sobretodo las que aplican a la comunicación religiosa.
El intérprete católico debe dominar las técnicas de interpretación más usadas en los ámbitos católicos.
IV. Cultura Sorda
El intérprete católico debe ser aliado a la comunidad sorda.
V. Espíritu
El intérprete católico debe cuidar a su espíritu.
En determinado momento, nosotros como intérpretes siempre estamos buscando mejorar nuestros conocimientos, habilidades, actitudes y comportamientos con relación a cada uno de estos pilares. La siguiente imagen muestra gráficamente la representación de un intérprete hipotético. Se aprecia que el intérprete tiene buenas destrezas lingüísticas, buena vinculación con la comunidad sorda y un espíritu alentado, pero le falta profundizar en los conocimientos teológicos y en las técnicas de interpretación.
Esta representación de los pilares es diferente para cada persona, y cada uno tiene sus propias áreas en dónde puedan mejorar. DCYIA-CITI pretende ofrecer la capacitación, información y recursos que los intérpretes requieren para que puedan desarrollarse conforme a sus necesidades y, así, ser buenos servidores a la Iglesia y a la comunidad sorda.

Despite the fact that thousands of Deaf people in Latin America have access to masses and other church information through interpreters, few countries have a program to train sign language interpreters and thus ensure quality service and full participation of Deaf people in society.
Therefore, DCYIA-CITI offers a program designed to meet the needs of Catholic interpreters in places without access to structured interpreter training. The curriculum, which is still under development, can be aligned with a one-hour mini-workshop or a full-length diploma course.
So far, we have launched the program twice, once in Coyoacán in 2017 (IITC 1) and once in Cuernavaca in 2019 (IITC 2), each lasting one week, each time taking advantage of the opportunity to improve the curriculum.
The curriculum is made up of five pillars that we determined were essential to develop in order to be a "comprehensive" Catholic interpreter. The pillars are:
I. Language
The Catholic interpreter must be fluent in the languages he or she works with.
II. Theology
The Catholic interpreter must handle both the theological language and the concepts themselves.
III. Interpretation
The Catholic interpreter must know the most important translation and interpretation theories, especially those that apply to religious communication.
The Catholic interpreter must master the most commonly used interpretation techniques in Catholic settings.
IV. Deaf Culture
The Catholic interpreter must be allied with the Deaf community.
V. Spirit
The Catholic interpreter must take care of his spirit.
At any given time, we as interpreters are always seeking to improve our knowledge, skills, attitudes and behavior in relation to each of these pillars. The following image graphically shows the representation of a hypothetical interpreter. It can be seen that the interpreter has good language skills, good links with the Deaf community and an encouraging spirit, but lacks in-depth theological knowledge and interpretation techniques.
This representation of the pillars is different for each person, and each has their own areas where they can improve. DCYIA-CITI aims to provide the training, information and resources that interpreters require so that they can develop according to their needs and be good servants to the Church and the Deaf community.
