Pilgrimage to Rome / Peregrinación a Roma

Papa Francesco: udienza con persone sorde del Dcyia. Graybill (presidente), "la Chiesa ci ha fatto sentire parte di essa" | AgenSIR

LA EXPERIENCIA

Durante 2016, la Junta Directiva de DCYIA se hizo una serie depreguntas sobre si esto funcionaría o no.

En 2017, de nuevo en Semana Santa, tres de nosotros volvimos a Roma y tratamos de confirmar los lugares y los tiempos en los que podíamos organizar una Conferencia y, lo que es más importante, hacer que el Santo Padre se encontrara realmente con la comunidad de sordos. Durante ese tiempo en Roma, elaboramos un plan, una lista de personal y una propuesta de presupuesto. La Junta Directiva de DCYIA en pleno acordó hacer el compromiso. Durante el resto del 2017, y todo el 2018, DCYIA y sus voluntarios trabajaron para armar un programa, reclutar oradores, recaudar dinero para hacer que todo esto suceda.

JUNIO 18-24, 2018: un equipo de 27 personas (incluyendo la Junta Directiva de DCYIA), sordos y oyentes, hombres y mujeres, laicos y religiosos, llegaron a Roma y se pusieron a trabajar. (Un grupo entero de voluntarios en México trabajó prácticamente día y noche durante 6 meses antes de reunir todos nuestros materiales.)

Lunes 25 de junio: después de una maravillosa misa en la capilla de la Congregación para la Doctrina de la Fe, con el P. Shawn Carey, los participantes de Alemania (incluyendo un diácono sordo y un diácono sordo-ciego); un sacerdote que trabaja con los sordos en Camboya; personas sordas y oyentes de EE.UU., México, Panamá, Guatemala, Ucrania, e Italia, todos se reunieron para registrarse. En muchos casos fue una reunión de personas que no se habían visto en años.

Martes 26 de junio: visita organizada al Museo Vaticano y a la Capilla Sixtina con guías turísticos sordos; misa en la Basílica de San Pedro celebrada por el Arzobispo Paul Gallagher, Secretario de Relaciones con los Estados del Vaticano. A pesar de admitir que nunca había celebrado una misa con intérpretes de lengua de signos, el Arzobispo pronunció una maravillosa homilía sobre la historia del Evangelio de Jesús y el hombre sordo de Marcos 7. La experiencia de tener la Misa interpretada en cuatro (probablemente cinco) lenguajes de signos fue impresionante y muy inspiradora para muchas personas que nunca habían asistido a una Misa como ésta.

Miércoles 27 de junio: a las 7:30 de la mañana, todo nuestro grupo se reunió con los miembros de las Olimpiadas Especiales que estaban en Roma para celebrar el 50 aniversario de la organización en el Salón Pablo VI. Llegó el Papa Francisco. Saludó tanto a DCYIA como a SPECIAL OLYMPICS y nos felicitó por nuestro trabajo. Se fue y pasó tiempo con todos los jóvenes discapacitados que participaron en las Olimpiadas Especiales. Luego, vino a nuestro grupo. Es difícil poner en palabras adecuadas los sentimientos de nuestros jóvenes, muchos de ellos procedentes de situaciones de pobreza, que han podido encontrarse y saludar al Papa, con intérpretes de lengua de signos a cada lado. La gente se quedó atónita con lágrimas de alegría y asombro. Ver al Papa VER a los sordos y CONVERSIÓN con los sordos fue algo que nunca olvidaré. Tomó 13 años, pero valió la pena. El mismo Papa se mostró muy conmovido por la experiencia, especialmente al encontrarse con dos sacerdotes sordos, el Padre Shawn Carey y el Padre Chris Klusman y dos diáconos sordos, Pat Graybill (nuestro presidente de la junta) y Josef Rothkopf de Alemania.

Por la tarde, celebramos una excelente conferencia en el Colegio Agustiniano sobre la situación de las personas sordas y de la Iglesia Católica "Un tiempo para caminar con Jesús". El Cardenal Peter K.A. Turkson Prefecto del Dicasterio para la Promoción del Desarrollo Humano Integral, el Arzobispo Rino Fisichella, Presidente del recién constituido Consejo Pontificio para la Promoción de la Nueva Evangelización, y un panel de trabajadores pastorales sordos, el servicio de oración de la Hna. Bonnie Mcmenamin SSJ, hicieron de este día un día inolvidable. (El "testigo" y el testimonio de los que participaron en el panel de sordos fue particularmente poderoso.) El Cardenal Turkson hizo referencia a las Recomendaciones que habíamos escrito en 2009 como un buen plan para que la Iglesia siga en su ministerio con las personas sordas.

Jueves 28 de JUNIO: una visita al Coliseo, y una última comida con todos. EDUARDO ALVAREZ, un joven líder sordo de Panamá, nos invitó a asistir a la Semana de la Juventud Católica en Panamá, en enero de 2019. Más tarde, esa misma noche, se llevó a cabo una evaluación del equipo de dos horas y media. Todos admitimos que aprendimos mucho, no sólo de la semana, sino de trabajar juntos. Qué y dónde DCYIA hará su próximo proyecto se decidirá en su reunión de la Junta Directiva en noviembre, Chicago, IL.

Es imposible sobreestimar la contribución y el trabajo de los intérpretes de lengua de signos y de los miembros del equipo durante todo este tiempo en Roma/Vaticano. Su trabajo no se limitaba a la interpretación. RAFAEL TREVINO & GERARDO CASTILLO tuvieron que programar responsabilidades de interpretación para múltiples escenarios, horarios y lugares. Además, tenían que coordinar si se les pedía a los intérpretes que firmaran, o que hablaran o copiaran a los oradores, celebrantes y presentadores de las firmas. Todo el grupo de intérpretes y nuestro EQUIPO trabajaron muy duro durante todos nuestros días en Roma/Vaticano.

Una consecuencia interesante de este viaje fue la publicidad, no sólo para DCYIA, sino también para las personas sordas de la Iglesia. Un reportero de la revista "America", una revista católica de gran tirada en los Estados Unidos, me entrevistó a mí y a otros para un reportaje. La entrevista de Pat Graybill en una publicación italiana llamada Servizio Informazione Religiosa (SIR) ha sido distribuida entre la comunidad sorda. L'Osservatore Romano, el periódico del Vaticano, tenía una buena historia de seguimiento sobre DCYIA y lo que pasó en la audiencia. Ha habido una gran cantidad de noticias sobre nuestro tiempo en Roma en los medios sociales. Una buena lección para nosotros: la importancia de los medios de comunicación, sociales y de otro tipo.

Estas son sólo algunas de las muchas personas y organizaciones que contribuyen a DCYIA.

THE EXPERIENCE

During 2016, the DCYIA Board asked itself a number of questions whether or not this would work.

In 2017, again in Easter week, three of us returned to Rome and tried to confirm places and times where we could in fact put on a Conference and, more importantly, have the Holy Father truly meet the deaf community. During that time in Rome, we put together a plan, a staffing list, and a proposed budget. The full Board of DCYIA agreed to make the commitment. During the rest of 2017, and all of 2018, DCYIA and its volunteers worked to put together a program, enlist speakers, raise money to make this all happen.

JUNE 18-24, 2018: a team of 27 people (including the DCYIA Board), hearing and deaf, men and women, lay and religious, arrived in Rome and went to work. (An entire group of volunteers in Mexico worked practically day and night for 6 months before to put together all our materials.)

Monday, JUNE 25: after a wonderful Mass at the chapel of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, with Fr. Shawn Carey, participants from Germany (including a deaf Deacon and a deaf-blind Deacon); a priest who works with the deaf in Cambodia; deaf and hearing people from USA, Mexico, Panama, Guatemala, Ukraine, and Italy, all gathered for registration. In many cases it was a reunion of people who had not seen each other for years.

Tuesday, JUNE 26: an organized visit to the Vatican Museum and Sistine Chapel with deaf tour guides; a Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica celebrated by Archbishop Paul Gallagher, Secretary for Relations with States for the Vatican. Despite admitting he had never celebrated a Mass with sign-language interpreters, the Archbishop gave a wonderful homily on the Mark 7 Gospel story of Jesus and the man who was deaf. The experience of having Mass interpreted in four (probably five) sign-languages was impressive and very inspiring to many people who had never attended a Mass like this.

Wednesday, JUNE 27: at 7:30am, our entire group gathered with members of the Special Olympics who were in Rome to celebrate the organization’s’ 50th anniversary in the Paul VI Hall. Pope Francis arrived. He greeted both DCYIA and SPECIAL OLYMPICS and congratulated us for our work. He went and spent time with every young disabled person with Special Olympics. Then, he came to our group. It is hard to put into any adequate words the feelings of our young people, many of them from poor situations, who were able to meet and greet the Pope, with sign-language interpreters on each side of him. People were stunned into tears of joy and amazement. Seeing the Pope SEE the deaf and CONVERSE with the deaf was something I will never forget. It took 13 years, but it was worth it. The Pope himself seemed very moved by the experience, especially in meeting two deaf priests, Fr. Shawn Carey and Fr. Chris Klusman and two deaf deacons, Pat Graybill (our president of the board) and Josef Rothkopf from Germany.

That afternoon, we held an excellent Conference at the Augustinian College on the situation of Deaf people and the Catholic Church “A time to walk with Jesus”. Cardinal Peter K.A. Turkson Prefect of the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development, Archbishop Rino Fisichella, President of the newly constituted Pontifical Council for the Promotion of the New Evangelization, and a panel of deaf pastoral workers, Sr. Bonnie Mcmenamin SSJ prayer service, made this a day never to be forgotten. (The “witness” and testimony of those who participated in the deaf panel was particularly powerful.) Cardinal Turkson referenced the Recommendations we had written in 2009 as a good blue-print for the Church to follow in its ministry with deaf persons.

Thursday, JUNE 28: a tour of the Coliseum, and a last meal together with everyone. EDUARDO ALVAREZ, a young deaf leader from Panama, invited us to attend the Catholic Youth week in Panama, January 2019. Later that evening, a two and half hour team evaluation took place. We all admitted we learned a lot, not just from the week, but from working together. What and where DCYIA will do its next project will be decided at its Board meeting in November, Chicago, IL.

It is impossible to overestimate the contribution and work of the sign-language interpreters and team members during this entire time in Rome/Vatican. Their work involved more than just interpreting. RAFAEL TREVINO & GERARDO CASTILLO had to schedule interpreting responsibilities for multiple settings, times, and places. In addition, they had to coordinate whether interpreters were being asked to sign or voice or copy sign speakers, celebrants, and presenters. The entire group of interpreters and our TEAM worked extremely hard throughout all our days in Rome/Vatican.

One interesting consequence of this trip was publicity, not only for DCYIA, but for deaf people in the Church. A reporter from “America” magazine, a large-circulation Catholic magazine in the USA, interviewed me and others for a story. Pat Graybill’s interview on an Italian Publication called Servizio Informazione Religiosa (SIR) has been circulated throughout the deaf community. L’Osservatore Romano, the Vatican newspaper, had a nice follow-up story about DCYIA and what happened at the audience. There has been a great deal of news about our time in Rome on social media. A good lesson for us re: the importance of media, social and otherwise.

This is just some of the many people and organizations that contribute to DCYIA.

Our entire board (Pat Graybill, Ian Robertson, Maryann Barth, Laureen Lynch-Ryan, Joe Mulcrone, John Kennedy and Chelo Manero Soto) worked tirelessly and as a family with our DCYIA Team. We are a family and we thank them always.

Long before we got to Rome, DCYIA entrusted itself into the hands of Our Lady of Guadalupe. As usual, she took care of us as only she can!

El momento más increíble de la peregrinación fue ver que muchas personas Sordas cumplian el sueño de conocer al Santo Padre. Ver esas caras llenas de alegría, fe y amor me llenaron el corazón; no sólo el día de la audiencia privada con el Papa también en cada una de las actividades planeadas, en las que nuestro corazón se encendía de gratitud y amor por tantas bendiciones recibidas.

Fue una experiencia increíble poder interpretar las palabras del Papa en la audiencia, quizá no encuentre una palabra para explicar lo que sentí en ese momento pero las palabras más cercanas son paz y un corazón lleno de alegría.

Sabes que Dios está en todas partes y en todas las personas que te manda en tu camino, es por eso que, sin duda sé que Dios ha estado presente en cada paso que DCYIA ha recorrido.

DCYIA es más que una guía para realizar un buen trabajo en la pastoral de la comunidad Sorda, es más que un vínculo de amistad, DCYIA es FAMILIA.

The most incredible moment of the pilgrimage was to see that many Deaf people fulfilled the dream of knowing the Holy Father. Seeing those faces filled with joy, faith and love filled my heart; not only on the day of the private audience with the Pope also in each of the planned activities, in which our heart was kindled with gratitude and love for so many blessings received.

It was an incredible experience to be able to interpret the Pope's words in the audience, perhaps I will not find a word to explain what I felt at that moment but the closest words are peace and a heart full of joy.

You know that God is everywhere and in all the people who send you on your way, that's why, without a doubt, I know that God has been present in every step that DCYIA has taken.

DCYIA is more than a guide to do a good job in the pastoral work of the Deaf community, it is more than a bond of friendship, DCYIA is FAMILY.

Fue un gran regalo de Papa Dios ir a El Vaticano a conocer el Papa Francisco, muchas gracias a Chelo y Padre Mulcrone por el viaje.

El recorrido del Museo del Vaticano, Las Basílicas de San Pedro, San Pablo, las otras iglesias y también en la Ciudad de Roma; todo fue hermoso.

La misa especial para sordos en la Basílica de San Pedro fue indescriptible y maravilloso!

En la Conferencia y Talleres “Tiempo para caminar con Jesús”, fue muy interesante. También tuve la oportunidad de observar a los 4 intérpretes de diferentes lenguas (México, USA, Guatemala y Italia) interpretando al mismo tiempo.

Qué lástima que el alojamiento de los participantes fue en diferentes lugares, quería compartir con los jóvenes de otros países, pero el tiempo fue corto y rápido. En la posada donde me quedé, estuve con el grupo de Guatemala y dos de México. Fue una experiencia maravillosa compartiendo con ellos.

It was a great gift from Pope God to go to the Vatican to meet Pope Francis, many thanks to Chelo and Father Mulcrone for the trip.

The tour of the Vatican Museum, St. Peter's Basilicas, St. Paul's, the other churches and also in the City of Rome; everything was beautiful.

The special Mass for the deaf in St. Peter's Basilica was indescribable and wonderful!

In the Conference and Workshops "Time to walk with Jesus", it was very interesting. I also had the opportunity to observe the 4 interpreters from different languages (Mexico, USA, Guatemala and Italy) interpreting at the same time.

What a pity that the accommodation of the participants was in different places, I wanted to share with young people from other countries, but the time was short and fast. In the inn where I stayed, I was with the group from Guatemala and two from Mexico. It was a wonderful experience sharing with them.

Debo aceptar que he sido afortunada por conocer otro pais, Roma. Encontrarme a otras personas sordas, otra cultura y saber que hay oportunidades en la vida, sobre todo en donde se puede apoyar a otras personas y trabajar con ellos.

Me enriquecio espiritualmente, me acerco mas a Dios. Que sorpresa conocer a un ser humano hermoso que es el Padre, JOE y a todas las demás personas.

Sentí una energia tan bella estar cerca del Papa, Francisco. Estár en las calles de Roma, toda esa historia es un gran aprendizaje; Dios quiera que podamos permanecer unidos, apoyando y trabajando con todo este maravilloso grupo DCYIA.

Gracias a Dios por estar en este camino. Celebro su existencia

I must accept that I have been fortunate to know another country, Rome. Meeting other deaf people, another culture and knowing that there are opportunities in life, especially where you can support other people and work with them.

I enrich myself spiritually, I draw closer to God. What a surprise to meet a beautiful human being who is the Father, JOE and all the other people.

I felt such a beautiful energy being close to the Pope, Francis. To be in the streets of Rome, all that history is a great learning; God willing we can remain united, supporting and working with all this wonderful group DCYIA.
