San Luis Potosi. A few basic facts:

 We had a total of 92 people. 4 Board members; 4 Mexican Sign-Language Interpreters; 4 American Sign-Language Interpreters; 3 paramedics; 9 other team members. We worked with 9 interpreters in training; 16 pastoral workers (almost all of them deaf); 41 young deaf adults ranging in age from 18-25; 2 guests.

The team arrived on Thursday, 7/2, and we travelled to the Lourdes Conference Center. 

Fri-Sat, 7-3-4, the team met constantly throughout the days preparing our programs, materials, etc.

Sunday, 7/5, some of the team remained at Lourdes, while others went to San Luis to pick up the participants. We began Sunday evening with Mass, a welcoming dinner, and introductions/rules/ and preliminary schedule. 

The days began at 7am and rarely ended before 11pm.

Beginning Monday, 7/6-Thrusday, 7/9, the week was a constant, busy, funny, revealing, deeply inspiring experience for all who participated. Our team continued to challenge the young people to stay involved, work with one another, take some risks in honesty about themselves and their lives.  

This is the fifth Encuentro I have been involved in. Honestly, I was again,  so moved personally and spiritually by the incredible enthusiasm and the deep faith these young people displayed. 

By the end of the week, it was as if the young people were the ones teaching us adults about how to live in this world as both deaf people and followers of Jesus Christ.

At the same time, we had hours of work with deaf adults who wish to become Pastoral Workers. The depth of their sharing about their lives, their struggles left us usually in tears by the end of our sessions.   

Two of our more experienced interpreters worked with the nine interpreters in training. 

The Lourdes Conference Center went beyond anything we could ask in providing hospitality, care, and excellent meals.

 By the time we all left on Friday, 7/10, we were a pretty exhausted bunch, but really very excited about what we had experienced.   

The night before, I asked all the participants to evaluate what they had experienced, what they liked, where we could improve. They were very complimentary and kept asking, "when will we do this again?????"

My being there was truly a blessing. To see these young people, their obvious desire to improve their lives and their inspiring Faith lifted me in ways I could not have anticipated.

San Luis Potosí. Algunos hechos básicos:

Tuvimos un total de 92 personas. 4 miembros de la Junta; 4 intérpretes de lengua de signos mexicanos; 4 intérpretes de lengua de signos americanos; 3 Paramédicos; otros 9 miembros del equipo. Trabajamos con 9 intérpretes en formación; 16 trabajadores pastorales (casi todos ellos sordos); 41 jóvenes sordos de edades comprendidas entre 18 y 25 años; 2 invitados.

El equipo llegó el jueves 7/2 y viajamos al Centro de Conferencias de Lourdes. 

Vie-Sábado, 7-3-4, el equipo se reunió constantemente a lo largo de los días preparando nuestros programas, materiales, etc.

Domingo, 7/5, algunos del equipo permanecieron en Lourdes, mientras que otros fueron a San Luis a recoger a los participantes. Comenzamos el domingo por la noche con la misa, una cena de bienvenida, y presentaciones/reglas/y programa preliminar. 

Los días comenzaban a las 7 de la mañana y raramente terminaban antes de las 11 de la noche.

A partir del lunes 7/6-el jueves 7/9, la semana fue una constante, ocupada, divertida, reveladora, profundamente inspiradora para todos los que participaron. Nuestro equipo continuó desafiando a los jóvenes a mantenerse involucrados, a trabajar unos con otros, a tomar algunos riesgos con honestidad sobre ellos mismos y sus vidas. 

Este es el quinto Encuentro en el que he estado involucrado. Honestamente, me sentí de nuevo, tan conmovido personal y espiritualmente por el increíble entusiasmo y la profunda fe que estos jóvenes mostraron. 

Al final de la semana, era como si los jóvenes fueran los que nos enseñaban a los adultos cómo vivir en este mundo como sordos y seguidores de Jesucristo.

Al mismo tiempo, tuvimos horas de trabajo con adultos sordos que desean convertirse en trabajadores pastorales. La profundidad de su compartir acerca de sus vidas, sus luchas nos dejaron generalmente en lágrimas al final de nuestras sesiones.   

Dos de nuestros más experimentados intérpretes trabajaron con los nueve intérpretes en formación. 

El Centro de Conferencias de Lourdes fue más allá de todo lo que podíamos pedir al proporcionar hospitalidad, cuidado y excelentes comidas.

 Cuando todos nos fuimos el viernes 7/10, estábamos bastante exhaustos, pero realmente muy emocionados por lo que habíamos experimentado.   

La noche anterior, pedí a todos los participantes que evaluaran lo que habían experimentado, lo que les gustaba, dónde podíamos mejorar. Fueron muy elogiosos y no dejaron de preguntarse: "¿cuándo volveremos a hacer esto?".

Mi presencia allí fue realmente una bendición. Ver a estos jóvenes, su obvio deseo de mejorar sus vidas y su inspiradora fe me elevó de maneras que no podía haber previsto.
